About Us

Born out of frustration, Roots is now committed to offering quality items and exceptional service. The year was 1994 and our founder, PJ Layng, had just moved to Cape Cod after a 20 year career in Corporate America. After unloading just about every piece of furniture she had had back in Newton, Mass., PJ prepared to start all over again, but realized that her new life partner was without a dining room table suitable for the many dinner parties she was going to have. PJ set out searching high and low across Old Cape Cod, from Provincetown to Barnstable, antique stores and furniture stores, but nothing she found quite worked. She was searching for a table with a "shabby-chic" look, made from old wood, custom designed, but affordable and practical. She soon found that there were many other people in her situation, moving to the Cape and setting up first homes or attempting to furnish second ones and not finding what they needed to do so. PJ sensed a need in the marketplace, found her true calling in life,and opened the first Roots Home and Garden store in Provincetown in 1995.
